Intelligent Data Assistant for Alibaba Live Streaming: Features, Architecture, and Business Impact
The article describes Alibaba's intelligent data assistant for live streaming, detailing streamer needs, the product's real‑time and post‑live reporting features, AI‑driven insights, the underlying big‑data architecture, and a rigorous experiment that demonstrates significant sales uplift and efficiency gains.
Live streaming has become a major e‑commerce channel, and Alibaba hosts millions of streamers who need timely, accurate data to adjust strategies, evaluate performance, and grow their audience.
To meet these needs, the Alibaba Data Intelligence team built an intelligent data assistant that provides real‑time session reports, post‑session reports, a conversational data robot, multi‑modal text mining, and a data screen for top streamers. These tools deliver core metrics on visits, conversions, and transactions, as well as trend analysis, traffic source breakdowns, and product performance.
The product architecture relies on a robust data pipeline: raw streaming events are ingested, processed into detailed (DWD) and summary (DWS) layers, and stored in ADB (chosen over Lindorm for its real‑time, multi‑dimensional query capabilities). Dimension tables cover streams, hosts, products, users, and channels, enabling reuse across multiple Alibaba live‑streaming services.
A controlled A/B experiment, conducted with Tsinghua University, split streamers by account suffix and compared groups with and without real‑time pre‑sale information. Statistical analysis (t‑tests) showed no significant baseline differences, ensuring comparability.
Results indicated that exposing real‑time pre‑sale data increased pre‑sale product sales by 18.6% (log‑sales), primarily through higher sales efficiency rather than longer exposure time. The effect was strongest for mid‑size audiences, and streamers who refreshed the assistant more frequently saw larger gains.
The study validates that AI‑enhanced, real‑time data insights can materially improve e‑commerce live‑stream performance, supporting data‑driven decision loops and demonstrating the business value of the intelligent data assistant.
