IntelliJ-Based IDE 2020 Feature Roadmap Overview

JetBrains released the IntelliJ Platform 2020 roadmap and, as part of the same plan, the feature roadmap for IntelliJ‑based IDEs, with the platform roadmap focusing on low‑level functionality and the IDE roadmap concentrating on higher‑level features that interact directly with users.

Localization efforts are underway: the JetBrains website now offers eight language versions, and the IDEs are being localized for the Asian market, starting with Simplified Chinese support followed by Korean and Japanese, with plugin‑based translation allowing community contributions for additional languages.

With recent startup performance improvements, the IDE can be used as a lightweight general‑purpose editor. A dedicated mode will open non‑project files quickly without storing project configuration, using the same workflow as a simple text editor, while still allowing an easy switch to full project mode for refactoring or debugging when needed.

Git integration currently relies on changelists rather than a traditional staging area; upcoming IDE versions will offer both a Git staging area and changelist mode, letting developers choose the UI that best fits their workflow.

Additional planned features include machine‑learning‑based code completion, simplified environment setup for beginners, automatic detection of project refactoring opportunities, and Code Vision that displays rich contextual information directly in the editor.
