Interview with Zhou Yanwei: Insights on MySQL, DBA Practices, and Community Building

Zhou Yanwei, currently Database Director at Qunar.com, oversees MySQL, Redis, and HBase platforms, with nearly a decade of experience including a stint as MySQL technical lead at Renren.com. He co‑founded the China MySQL User Group (ACMUG) and served as its chairman, expanding it nationwide.

He co‑authored the book "MySQL Operations Reference – Core Principles and Best Practices for MySQL, Galera, Inception" and was honored as an Oracle MySQL ACE Director in early 2016.

Zhou explains that MySQL’s rise stems from its simplicity, open‑source nature, early replication support, pluggable storage engines, strong community backing, and extensive collaborations, making it the de‑facto choice for high‑concurrency web applications.

Beyond MySQL, he emphasizes the “DBA spirit” – responsibility, service, communication, learning, progress, and sharing – and describes the DBA role as a blend of system administrator, developer, project manager, and firefighter.

He advises extensive reading of official documentation, active participation in community events, and hands‑on practice as effective learning methods, while promoting the ACMUG platform for knowledge exchange.

Looking ahead, Zhou predicts MySQL will continue to dominate by advancing clustering technologies such as Galera, Group Replication, NDB Cluster, and InnoDB Cluster, serving traditional enterprises for years to come.
