ioredis Node.js Redis Client Acquired by Redis Ltd – History, Features, and Migration

ioredis author Luin announced that the ioredis project has been acquired by Redis Ltd, and its GitHub repository has been migrated to the official Redis organization.

The library, described as robust, high‑performance, and feature‑rich, has become the most popular Redis client for Node.js over the past two years.

Initially, Luin started using Node.js for backend development in late 2014 and found existing Redis clients lacking Promise support, having unattractive command syntax, and missing features such as Cluster and Sentinel, prompting him to develop ioredis from scratch as an open‑source side project.

After nine years of development, ioredis transitioned from a personal side project to a widely adopted open‑source library and was eventually acquired, illustrating a successful open‑source lifecycle.
