Jeff Bezos Envisions Gigawatt Space Data Centers Powered by Solar for AI

Jeff Bezos, founder of Amazon, spoke at the Technology Week conference in Turin, Italy, saying that within the next 10 to 20 years humanity could build gigawatt‑scale data centers in space.

He likened today’s AI boom to the biotech surge of the 1990s and the internet explosion at the turn of the century, acknowledging a bubble but insisting that AI will ultimately deliver substantial societal benefits.

Bezos expressed overall optimism about AI while urging a clear distinction between any speculative bubble and the technology’s real‑world impact.

Regarding space‑based data centers, he argued that continuous, interference‑free solar power in orbit will eventually make their operating costs lower than those of ground‑based facilities, and he expects to see orbital gigawatt‑level computing clusters within the next decade or two.

He further noted that massive AI training clusters are best placed in space because there is no cloud, rain, or weather to disrupt power generation.

Bezos described this shift as part of a broader pattern already seen with weather and communications satellites, predicting that space data centers will be followed by other space‑based industries such as manufacturing.

He concluded that AI’s benefits are already evident across many fields and will become ubiquitous, urging optimism similar to the public’s reaction to the early internet.
