Key Findings from CNCF’s 2020‑2021 Cloud Native Survey in China

The annual CNCF survey of cloud‑native and open‑source technology adoption in China was released, providing data‑driven insight into the pace and impact of cloud‑native technologies such as containers, Kubernetes, and DevOps on Chinese enterprises.

Key takeaways:

Container usage continues to rise dramatically – 68% of organizations run containers in production (a 39% increase YoY) and 94% use containers in at least one stage.

Kubernetes is now ubiquitous, with 82% of respondents using it in production (up from 72% last year).

Public cloud remains the top data‑center choice (46% of respondents), while hybrid and multi‑cloud adoption are growing.

Automation is increasing: 30% employ automated release cycles and 73% run CI/CD pipelines in production.

Observability tools are widely adopted – 95% use monitoring, 94% logging, and 86% tracing.

Serverless usage is expanding (31% in production) with Alibaba Cloud Function Compute and AWS Lambda as the leading hosted platforms.

Service mesh adoption is strong (38% in production) though complexity remains a challenge.

CNCF project usage: Graduated projects such as Prometheus, CoreDNS, etcd, and Harbor saw significant growth; incubating projects like CNI, gRPC, OpenTracing, and CRI‑O also increased usage. Virtual Kubelet became the most used sandbox project (18%).

Community insights: Over 60 Chinese members represent more than 8% of CNCF membership, making China the third‑largest contributor base. The community learns about cloud native primarily through podcasts (54%), KubeCon/CloudNativeCon events (45%), and online resources such as the Kubernetes blog and CNCF website.

Methodology: The survey was conducted in Dec 2020‑Jan 2021 in Mandarin, with 439 respondents (91% from Asia), half of whom belong to the CNCF End‑User Community, and a majority from large enterprises (40% from organizations with >5,000 employees).
