Linux Wins Again—And This Time No One Disagrees

A Reddit post titled “Linux has officially won” quickly amassed 1,646 up‑votes and 375 comments, linking two recent announcements: Apple’s Container v1.0.0 and Microsoft’s WSL Containers.

Apple released Container v1.0.0 on GitHub under the Apache 2.0 license, written in Swift for Apple Silicon, and it has already earned more than 26,000 stars. The runtime runs each container inside a lightweight virtual machine, fully OCI‑compatible, allowing users to execute Docker/OCI images on macOS without Docker Desktop, Podman, or any third‑party tool.

Microsoft announced WSL Containers at Build 2026, with a public preview starting in July. The core command is wslc.exe, which enables native Linux container execution on Windows 11 without Docker. Microsoft also released a WSL Containers API that lets developers embed container management capabilities directly into C, C++, and C# applications.

Putting the two announcements together reveals a clear pattern: macOS and Windows—together accounting for over 99 % of the desktop market—are now treating Linux containers as first‑class citizens, integrating support at the operating‑system level rather than through third‑party layers.

One of the top Reddit comments summed it up succinctly: “Linux has won, but not in the way people expected. It didn’t replace Windows or macOS; instead, both OSes chose to provide native support for it as a common runtime.”

The motivations differ: Apple aims to give developers a seamless way to build and test Linux workloads on Macs, reinforcing macOS as a preferred development platform, while Microsoft wants Windows to become the primary entry point for cloud‑native development. Regardless of intent, the result is the same—Linux containers become a cross‑platform lingua franca.

Both projects are still early. Apple’s Container currently runs only on Apple Silicon, and WSL Containers remain in preview, but they both point toward Linux as the underlying consensus for future workloads.
