Meitu Technical Salon: Classic Video Technology Architecture and Optimization Practices

The 10th Meitu Internet Technical Salon successfully concluded, focusing on "Classic Video Technology Architecture and Optimization Cases". Technical experts from Meitu and Inke shared practical insights from their work.

Topic 1: Meipai Short Video Cost Reduction and Millisecond Startup Optimization

In recent years, short video has become a major internet trend. As one of the earliest short video applications, Meipai faced common challenges including long video loading times, slow startup speeds, and high download costs. This presentation provided a comprehensive overview of Meitu's streaming media technology system, covering its evolution from initial development to advanced stages. The speaker shared experiences in cost optimization, experience optimization, quality optimization, and data-driven optimization, revealing secrets behind balancing streaming media costs and video quality, as well as techniques for improving startup speed and reducing playback error rates.

Speaker: Huang Jifeng, Senior Technical Manager of Architecture Platform at Meitu. Currently responsible for Meitu Cloud technology platform construction including cloud storage, cloud processing, streaming media technology, public business, and basic services. Current focus on advancing cloud processing FaaS, business containerization, and cloud platform technology systems.

Topic 2: Building a Live Quiz System Supporting Millions of Concurrent Users

2018 was the first year of live quiz platforms. As a leading live streaming platform, Inke rapidly implemented live quiz functionality from scratch. With explosive user growth, the existing system architecture faced significant challenges. This presentation addressed the pain points of live quiz systems, covering quiz business, architecture evolution, and long-lived connections, explaining how to build a system supporting millions of simultaneous online users along with specific practical experiences.

Speaker: Li Yuan, Architect at Inke Live. Former CTO of a technology startup and former communication architect at Sina Weibo, specializing in building large-scale high-concurrency complex systems with years of experience in communications, live video streaming, and file storage scenarios.

Topic 3: Five Optimizations to Reduce Meipai Live Streaming First-Screen Time by Over 70%

With the boom in mobile live streaming, numerous businesses have live streaming requirements, making it a basic feature. First-screen time is the most critical experience factor during live streaming viewing, directly affecting user perception of the live streaming app. Meipai's live streaming first-screen time has been reduced from seconds-level at the beginning of 2017 to under one second today—a reduction of over 70%. Most requests now fall within the 0-500ms and 500-1000ms ranges, achieving instant playback for most popular videos. This presentation provided detailed analysis of factors affecting live streaming first-screen time based on overall client architecture design, enabling attendees to understand specific live streaming optimization strategies.

Speaker: Bao Honglai, iOS Technical Expert at Meitu Architecture Platform Department. Currently working on client SDK R&D, responsible for Meipai live streaming, blockchain, and other SDK-related work. Previously worked at YY responsible for short video R&D, with rich experience in audio/video streaming.
