Microsoft Confirms Decommissioning of Windows Control Panel in Favor of Settings App

Rumors about Microsoft eliminating the traditional Control Panel began as early as 2011, before Windows 8 was released, with the company using the Settings app to replace many Control Panel functions.

Subsequent speculation suggested a complete removal of the Control Panel, yet it still exists in Windows 11, though many settings have already migrated, such as the "Programs and Features" option disappearing in the latest Windows 11 preview.

Today Microsoft published a new support document confirming that the Control Panel is slated for deprecation, to be superseded by the Settings app, which offers a more modern and streamlined experience.

The company did not provide a specific timeline, but indicated that the Control Panel could be removed as early as the Windows 11 25H2 release, since the upcoming 24H2 version is already finalized and unlikely to undergo major changes.

Microsoft also noted that, for compatibility reasons, the Control Panel remains usable for settings not yet migrated to the Settings app, but users are encouraged to adopt the Settings app whenever possible.

The Control Panel has long served as a centralized location for viewing and adjusting system settings, including adding or removing software.

Over time, Microsoft has gradually moved functionality to the Settings app or provided alternative shortcuts, reducing the Control Panel's role; however, retaining it for users who need it remains beneficial.

One feature that has not yet migrated is "Security and Maintenance," where users can adjust UAC controls, which is still absent from the Settings app.

Other features such as "File History" and "System Restore" also appear missing from Settings, though users can still access them via the search function.

Additionally, the classic "God Mode" shortcut, which allows continued use of the Control Panel, may also be removed if the Control Panel is fully deprecated.
