Microsoft Confirms KB5002907 Update Deletes Office Licenses, Triggers Uninstalls

Microsoft has acknowledged that optional update KB5002907, intended to fix Microsoft 365 component update failures, accidentally deletes Office 2016 and 2019 licenses and in some cases uninstalls the suite entirely; the company has halted distribution and advises affected users to reactivate with original licenses or reinstall Office.

Faulty Optional Update KB5002907 Causes Office License Loss and Uninstalls

Microsoft has confirmed that a recently released optional non-security update, KB5002907, inadvertently deletes licensing information for Microsoft Office 2016 and Office 2019. After installing the update and rebooting, affected users see "unlicensed product" warnings and cannot edit documents. In a minority of cases, the entire Office installation is automatically removed.

Background: Update Intended to Fix Stalled Microsoft 365 Component Updates

KB5002907 was designed to help Microsoft 365 components that had not received updates for more than 90 days and were on the Current Channel or Monthly Channel. The update is delivered via Windows Update to any system that has not disabled automatic updates. Its purpose was to restore the ability of those components to receive future updates.

Scope of the Problem

Microsoft has verified that Office 2016 and Office 2019 installations exhibit the licensing anomaly after applying KB5002907. The issue manifests as an "unlicensed product" message and loss of editing capability. A smaller number of reports indicate that the Office suite is completely uninstalled. In response, Microsoft has immediately stopped distributing the problematic update to prevent further impact.

Workaround for Affected Users

Microsoft provides the following temporary remediation steps:

If the license was deleted but Office remains installed, reactivate the product using the original license key.

If Office was uninstalled, reinstall the corresponding version of Office and then activate it with the original license key.

This incident follows a previous September monthly update that broke Excel copy-paste and formula calculation, which Microsoft addressed with out-of-band update KB5002665.
