Microsoft Gives Copilot AI the Power to Execute Edits in Office365
Microsoft has rolled out Copilot across Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, enabling the AI to not only suggest but actually perform edits, while default‑enabling the feature, sparking criticism over forced integration, trust concerns, and prompting Microsoft to stress new visibility and control options.
Microsoft gives Copilot the power to stop merely suggesting edits and start executing them within the Office suite.
Earlier this week Microsoft announced that Copilot is now available in Word, Excel and PowerPoint as part of the Microsoft 365 suite, turning the previous sidebar suggestions into a tool that can edit documents, adjust spreadsheets and create slides automatically.
The feature is enabled by default, but users must activate it through a prominent prompt on the right side; they can also completely disable Copilot by following the instructions on the provided page.
This rollout is the next step in Microsoft’s broader AI strategy, which has already embedded AI assistants into Windows, GitHub and most of its product portfolio.
Critics, including Mozilla, argue that the move resembles a forced integration, making Copilot effectively indispensable rather than an optional add‑on.
They also raise trust concerns, questioning the reliability of AI‑driven decisions and warning that enterprises may be forced to handle new, unannounced capabilities without preparation.
Microsoft responded that it has listened to the criticism, emphasizing increased visibility and control: users can view changes, monitor Copilot’s actions in multi‑step edits, and see what the assistant is doing at any time.
According to early user feedback, the new default experience has already proven more useful in real work scenarios.
