Microsoft Goes Solo with 7 New AI Models and Tools at Build 2026

MAI self‑developed models

MAI‑Thinking‑1 – reasoning‑focused model for complex mathematical and software‑engineering tasks; benchmark results were presented as matching or exceeding Claude and surpassing Sonnet 4.6 on certain dimensions. The presenter emphasized that the model was built without distilling any third‑party models.

MAI‑Code‑1‑Flash – 5 B‑parameter code‑generation model aimed at agentic coding. Microsoft claimed performance better than Claude Haiku 4.5 and announced deep integration with GitHub Copilot, Visual Studio Code and the broader Microsoft stack.

MAI‑Image‑2.5/Flash – multimodal model supporting text‑to‑image and image‑to‑image generation. The presenter highlighted higher Arena benchmark scores than Nano Banana Pro and emphasized image quality, editing capability and text rendering.

MAI‑Transcribe‑1.5 – audio‑to‑text model for fast speech transcription.

MAI‑Voice‑2/Flash – speech‑generation model supporting fifteen languages.

Additional specialized models for inference, image and speech complete the AI capability set.

AI Agent Scout in Microsoft 365

Scout is an enterprise‑grade AI agent embedded directly in Microsoft 365 Teams. It can receive natural‑language commands, process emails, manage calendars, schedule meetings, draft replies and follow up on tasks. The underlying engine is the OpenClaw project, which Microsoft hardened with the MXC security sandbox.

During a live demo the team instructed OpenClaw to delete all files on the desktop. Even after disabling OpenClaw’s internal security layer, the operation was blocked by the MXC sandbox, demonstrating the sandbox’s effectiveness.

MXC is an OS‑level security sandbox for AI agents. It isolates agents from the host system, preventing unsafe operations such as file deletion. The sandbox’s protection was illustrated by the aforementioned file‑deletion demo.

GitHub Copilot desktop client

Microsoft released a standalone Copilot desktop application named My Work . The UI aggregates all active AI tasks in a single view, allowing developers to fix bugs, implement features and handle pull‑request feedback concurrently.

The client includes an Agent Merge feature that monitors a pull request, waits for continuous‑integration checks, reviewer approval and green status, then automatically merges the change.

Copilot’s SDK was opened to major runtimes – Node, Python, Go, .NET, Rust and Java – enabling developers to build custom internal tools with a unified runtime.

Windows developer experience upgrades

Coreutils for Windows – more than 75 Linux command‑line utilities (ls, cat, grep, sed, awk, etc.) rewritten in Rust and shipped natively on Windows.

WSL Containers – a forthcoming feature that lets users create and manage Linux containers directly inside WSL, with enterprise policy controls for source and permission management.

Intelligent Terminal – an AI‑enhanced terminal that can parse error messages, diagnose causes and execute multi‑step remediation without leaving the console.

Windows Developer Configurations – a one‑click setup that installs VS Code, GitHub Copilot, PowerShell 7, WSL, Git and other tools via WinGet.

Surface RTX Spark Dev Box

Microsoft unveiled a compact AI development workstation equipped with an NVIDIA RTX Spark accelerator, 128 GB unified memory and up to 1 PFLOP of AI compute. The device is capable of running a 1.2 billion‑parameter model with a 1 million‑token context window, targeting local model inference, agent testing and prototype development.

These announcements collectively illustrate Microsoft’s strategy to build an end‑to‑end AI ecosystem that includes foundational models, developer tooling, security sandboxes and specialized hardware, reducing reliance on external AI providers.
