Microsoft Restores VS Code Themes After False Positive Security Scan

Microsoft reinstated the popular Material Theme and Material Theme Icons extensions on the Visual Studio Marketplace after determining that the obfuscated code flagged by an AI‑based security scan was merely an old build script, apologizing to the developer, restoring the account, and announcing updates to its obfuscation policy and scanning tools to prevent similar false positives.

Microsoft Restores VS Code Themes After False Positive Security Scan

Microsoft reinstated the Material Theme and Material Theme Icons extensions on Visual Studio Marketplace after confirming the obfuscated code was harmless.

The extensions, downloaded over 9 million times, were removed in February after security researchers Amit Assaraf and Itay Kruk used an AI model to flag them.

Microsoft found the flagged code was an old build script with harmless obfuscation, apologized, and restored the developer’s account.

The case prompted Microsoft to update its Marketplace obfuscation policy and scanning tools to avoid future false positives.
