Microsoft Tests Displaying Memory Speed in MT/s Instead of MHz in Windows 11 Task Manager
Microsoft is experimenting with showing memory speed as MT/s rather than the traditional MHz in the Windows 11 Task Manager performance tab, reflecting newer DDR technologies that increase data transfer rates without raising clock speeds, and this change is currently being rolled out in the Windows 11 Beta build 22635.3570.
Microsoft is testing the display of memory speed in MT/s (mega‑transfers per second) instead of the traditional MHz (megahertz) on the Performance tab of the Windows 11 Task Manager, aiming to more accurately reflect the performance of modern DDR memory technologies.
Historically, memory speed has been expressed in MHz, which indicates the number of clock cycles per second; however, recent DDR generations can increase data transfer rates without raising the clock frequency, making the MHz metric less representative of actual throughput.
Consequently, the industry is shifting toward MT/s as the preferred metric, representing the number of data transfers per second, to better capture the capabilities of contemporary memory modules.
Recent observations show that this MT/s display is present in the Windows 11 Beta preview, specifically in build 22635.3570, and is being pushed to all Beta Insider users.
