Mistral Large: The Open‑Source LLM Challenging GPT‑4 on Azure

Mistral AI, a French artificial‑intelligence startup founded less than a year ago and based in Paris, announced its newest flagship model, Mistral Large . The company claims the model can match GPT‑4’s performance and is available through its own platform and Microsoft Azure AI.

Microsoft, seeking to reduce reliance on OpenAI, announced a strategic partnership with Mistral on the 26th, making Azure AI the first external platform to host the model. This partnership positions Mistral as the second company after OpenAI’s ChatGPT to launch a commercial language model on Azure.

Mistral Large is an open‑source generative AI model that builds on the earlier Mistral 7B release. According to the startup, the model offers top‑tier inference capabilities, excelling at code generation, mathematical reasoning, and multilingual tasks across English, French, German, Spanish, and Italian.

Co‑founder and CEO Arthur Mesch described the release as a “significant milestone,” emphasizing the model’s unparalleled multilingual performance and its potential to push the limits of frontier AI.

The model introduces several advanced features: a 32,000‑token context window that enables processing of much larger documents, precise instruction following, and built‑in support for custom audit strategies useful in chat interfaces such as le Chat. Its output is forced into valid JSON, allowing developers to extract structured information easily.

Beyond language understanding, Mistral Large can handle complex multilingual reasoning tasks, including text comprehension, transformation, and code generation. Its deep grasp of grammar and cultural nuances enables more accurate, context‑aware translations and interactions.

In addition to Mistral Large, the company released a smaller, optimized model called Mistral Small , which focuses on lower latency and reduced deployment costs.

Microsoft will assist Mistral in bringing its AI models to market and holds a small, undisclosed equity stake in the startup. Mistral has also launched a multilingual conversational assistant named “Le Chat,” currently in beta for early customers and slated for broader enterprise release.

Financially, Mistral raised €105 million in Europe’s largest seed round in June and reached a €2 billion valuation by December, securing an additional €450 million investment. The startup joins other European AI players such as Germany’s Aleph Alpha and Helsinki’s Silo AI in offering alternatives to OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
