MIT's GPT-6 Astra Edits Qwen Weights Directly, Boosting Math Skills 6x Without Training

MIT researchers demonstrate GPT-6 Astra directly modifying Qwen3.5-0.8B's weights, improving MATH-500 scores from 7.9% to 48.1% (6x) by altering only 0.016% of parameters without gradient descent, and even writing neural network weights from scratch for games, outperforming PPO baselines 20x.

Introduction

MIT researchers have introduced Weight-Space Programming , a paradigm where a frontier large language model (GPT-6 Astra) directly analyzes and edits the weights of smaller neural networks to improve their capabilities — without any gradient-based training. In a series of experiments, Astra modified Qwen3.5-0.8B, diagnosed reasoning loops, rewrote feed-forward network weights, and even generated functional network weights from zero initialization for control tasks.

Qwen Weight Editing Experiment

Researchers gave Astra a Python environment containing all weights of Qwen3.5-0.8B with a single instruction: maximize mathematical ability. Astra identified that the model's poor math performance was largely caused by reasoning loops — the model repeatedly generated similar text without producing an answer. In the first 96 practice responses, 85 hit the 32,768 token length limit.

Tracing the failure, Astra located the issue in the feed-forward networks at layers 15 and 19, modifying the corresponding weights in 64 output columns each. This intervention reduced the proportion of MATH-500 responses hitting the length limit from 93.0% to 33.1% .

With varying forward-call budgets (10, 25, 50), the edited model achieved MATH-500 scores of 12.3%, 14.1%, and 48.1% respectively — up from the original 7.9%. Notably, Astra eliminated the need for gradient training, though model diagnosis and verification steps still required computation. Instruction-following ability, not explicitly targeted, also improved 3-fold .

Weight Reading Capabilities

To test whether Astra can interpret raw weights, researchers trained four small networks on different Atari games (Breakout, Pong, Ms. Pac-Man, Highway) with identical architectures. Given only the raw weight tensors as text, Astra correctly identified all four games . For Breakout, it inferred the game from the spatial concentration of weights .

On a diffusion model generating shapes, Astra recognized circles, squares, and triangles from weights, but mistook filled shapes for outlines — it detected geometry but not fill style.

In a harder test, three 7.2M-parameter language models were trained on Python code, Japanese romaji, and English, with input/output layers removed. Without being able to run the models, Astra used Python to analyze weights and in two attempts identified all three languages and located every induction head .

Mountain Car Control Experiment

A PPO-trained network for the Mountain Car task repeatedly accelerated up the slope and got stuck; the optimal policy requires reversing first to build momentum. Given the weights, environment description, and a failure trajectory, Astra — without any tools — produced a weight patch in a single reply, modifying only 3.5% of weights . The patched network succeeded in 100% of 1,024 test episodes . The action sequence that PPO could not learn was directly written into the weights by Astra.

Zero-Shot Network Generation (MinAtar Games)

Pushing further, researchers asked Astra to write a functional network from zero-initialized weights for MinAtar games. Provided only game rules, source code, and network architecture — no training data, loss, gradients, or environment interaction — Astra had to devise a strategy and translate it into layer weights in one reply.

The generated networks achieved an average score of 517.4 . For comparison, PPO after 100M steps scored 15.8 , and after 500M steps scored 25.3 — Astra's zero-shot weights outperformed the 500M-step PPO baseline by 20x .

Weight-Space Programming: Concept and Caveats

The core contribution is demonstrating that a general-purpose frontier model can analyze and rewrite neural network weights guided by natural language objectives. Astra's knowledge and reasoning abilities stem from its own prior training; weight analysis, code generation, batch inference, and evaluation still consume substantial compute. GPUs are not obsolete.

However, the workflow suggests a new debugging loop: when a small model underperforms, developers may first ask — "Do we need to retrain, or can we just edit the weights?"
