One Car, Three Forms: How a Modular Micro‑Car Redefines Urban Mobility

For designers, the greatest challenge is not creating complexity but finding elegance and function within extreme constraints. The micro‑car, a seemingly simple subject, provides an ideal stage for this challenge. Designer Wini Camacho looked at the classic Fiat Topolino and envisioned a modular partner that could change with mood and scenario.

Concept Car: Topolino XS

Camacho developed the “Topolino XS,” a highly flexible concept vehicle that is not locked into a single body form. Instead, it is a modular micro‑car that adapts to the driver’s mood and purpose.

Modular Forms

In one configuration the car becomes an open‑top Targa suitable for relaxed daytime cruising. After swapping components it can turn into a closed coupe for night driving, or a pure roadster for spirited night runs. Despite the “three‑in‑one” approach, the design remains minimal and restrained, adhering to a minimalist philosophy.

Dimensions and Proportions

Topolino XS retains the recognizable DNA of a micro hatchback while optimizing proportions for a smoother, more dynamic silhouette. The front and rear achieve visual balance, giving the vehicle a stable stance without increasing volume. Its overall size is even smaller than the original Topolino, measuring 2.4 m in length and 1.4 m in width. As an electric concept, this compact size is a deliberate, thoughtful result rather than a limitation.

Lighting Design

The lighting system plays a key role in expressing the XS’s personality. The front headlights resemble expressive eyes made of circular elements with white LED outlines. The rear tail lights consist of hundreds of micro‑LEDs that the driver can customize with a single button, allowing the car’s “character” to change on demand.

Interior Layout

The cabin adopts an unconventional central steering layout, consolidating controls, instruments, and safety functions in one place. This reinforces the design’s balance and simplicity.
