On June 11, Tencent announced the donation of its OpenKona JDK compiler to the Open Atom Open‑Source Foundation, including source code, binaries, trademarks, build and test infrastructure, and community resources.
OpenKona, built on the OpenJDK project, claims a performance improvement of up to 15% over the community version, especially in big‑data, machine‑learning, and cloud‑computing scenarios.
Historically, JDK development and distribution have been dominated by foreign vendors; OpenKona aims to provide a domestically controlled, open‑source Java standard edition.
Since early 2019, Tencent has contributed to OpenKona, achieving the top rank in OpenJDK China enterprise contributions for six consecutive releases.
More than 90% of Tencent’s internal JDK usage now runs on OpenKona, deployed on over a million server instances across all business lines and serving more than 120 external companies.
OpenKona supports domestic CPUs (ARM, x86) and operating systems such as Kylin, UnionTech UOS, and TencentOS Server, and its national‑cryptography suite implements a full‑stack secure communication stack.
In addition to OpenKona, Tencent has contributed other Java ecosystem projects, such as the Spring Cloud Tencent framework.
