The official title of the June 2023 TIOBE ranking is “Will Python remain number 1?”. Over the past five years Python has won the TIOBE Index three times, thanks to growth in data science and artificial intelligence, rising from a 3% share in 2017 to 17% at the end of last year, before falling to 13% this year.

Python’s ability to stay at the top depends on the continued popularity of AI tools such as ChatGPT; as long as these remain hot topics, Python is likely to retain its leading position.

Artificial‑intelligence applications like ChatGPT have positively impacted Python, boosting its use in text processing and natural‑language processing, expanding the ecosystem and encouraging open‑source contributions.

Two new languages entered the top 50 for the first time: X++ (used in Microsoft Dynamics) and Raku (a successor to Perl).

X++ is an object‑oriented language originally developed by Axapta and now integrated into Microsoft Dynamics AX for enterprise resource planning, covering finance, supply‑chain, and CRM functions.

Raku, formerly known as Perl 6, is a general‑purpose language designed for flexibility, readability, and maintainability; its design started in 2000 and it was officially released in 2019, forming a distinct branch of the Perl family.
