Stack Overflow’s Traffic Decline Amid the Rise of ChatGPT and GitHub Copilot

In March 2023 Stack Overflow experienced a 13.9% drop in traffic, continuing a trend of roughly 6% monthly decline since January 2022. At the same time, OpenAI’s ChatGPT saw exponential growth, attracting 1.6 billion visits in March, and GitHub’s traffic rose 26.4% to 5.24 billion visits.

Data from SimilarWeb shows that developers are increasingly turning to AI chatbots such as ChatGPT and GitHub Copilot for coding assistance, reducing reliance on traditional Q&A platforms like Stack Overflow. The free‑trial registrations for GitHub Copilot more than doubled between February and March, reaching 800,000 sign‑ups.

Stack Overflow’s leadership acknowledges the challenge: the company temporarily banned ChatGPT‑generated content and is planning to monetize its data by charging large‑model developers and enterprises for access to its 50 million questions and answers. CEO Prashanth Chandrasekar also announced a 10% workforce reduction, affecting about 58 employees, as the firm refocuses on profitability and AI‑centric products.

While GitHub’s growth is linked to its early adoption of OpenAI models (Copilot is built on the same technology as ChatGPT) and Microsoft’s broader AI strategy, Stack Overflow remains a vital community for detailed, peer‑reviewed solutions. However, the convenience of AI‑generated code snippets is shifting developer habits toward prompt‑engineering and large‑model usage.

The article concludes that the competition between Stack Overflow, ChatGPT, and Copilot reflects a larger shift in the software development ecosystem, raising questions about data licensing, energy consumption, content hallucinations, and potential misuse, all of which will shape the future of AI‑augmented programming.
