Tech Layoffs Create Unprecedented Opportunities for XR Startups

In early 2023 more than 100,000 employees were let go from major technology firms such as Microsoft, Google, Amazon and Meta, marking the most severe layoff wave in two decades and striking even the heavily funded metaverse initiatives.

Talent migration data shows that high‑skill professionals are increasingly targeting smaller firms; after the layoffs, the proportion of applications to companies with fewer than 1,000 employees rose, while large‑enterprise applications fell.
