Tencent Cloud Basic Network to VPC Migration Guide

This guide explains why Tencent Cloud’s Basic Network must be replaced by VPC for security isolation and details migration methods—including interconnection, CVM conversion, IP changes, image rebuilding, database VPC conversion, DTS, and load‑balancer adjustments—illustrated by a case study moving 600+ CVMs across 80 projects.

Tencent Cloud Basic Network to VPC Migration Guide

This article provides a comprehensive guide for migrating from Tencent Cloud's Basic Network to Virtual Private Cloud (VPC). The Basic Network is a shared network resource pool where all internal IP addresses are assigned by Tencent Cloud, while VPC offers logical isolation allowing users to define custom network segments, IP addresses, and routing policies.

Due to tenant isolation security concerns, many cloud products no longer support Basic Network and only support VPC. The article details migration tools for various cloud resources:

1. Cloud Virtual Machine (CVM): Four main tools are available: (1) VPC-Basic Network Interconnection - allows CVMs to access both networks; (2) CVM Network Conversion - switches CVM to VPC network with restart required; (3) Public IP to Elastic IP - converts public IPs; (4) Full Image - creates custom images for migration.

2. Cloud Database Redis: Network change feature allows switching to VPC.

3. Cloud Database MySQL: VPC network conversion feature available.

4. Database General: Data Transmission Service (DTS) for data migration.

5. CLB (Cloud Load Balancer): Public CLB supports migration via domain name; Internal CLB requires rebuild.

6. CFS and Ckafka: Do not support migration and require rebuild with manual data copy.

A practical case study is presented: migrating 80 projects with 600+ CVMs from Basic Network to VPC. The solution uses MySQL/Redis VPC conversion capability (allowing access from both networks during transition), VPC-Basic Network interconnection tools, and Rolling Update for platform servers to gradually switch database connections. The migration steps include: first establishing VPC interconnection for platform cluster CVMs, then progressively migrating databases to VPC while updating server configurations, and finally decommissioning Basic Network resources.
