Tencent’s First T17 Scientist: The AI & Robotics Pioneer Driving Breakthroughs

Just now, Tencent announced its first 17‑level researcher and distinguished scientist: Dr. Zhang Zhengyou, leader of Tencent AI Lab and the Robotics X laboratory.

Reaching the T17 level is extremely rare; among tens of thousands of Tencent engineers, only a handful have attained level 15 or above, and T17 is the highest rank in the company’s technical hierarchy.

Under Dr. Zhang’s leadership, the AI Lab and Robotics X have delivered a series of notable achievements:

The quadruped robot Jamoca, capable of walking, trotting, jumping, and tackling complex challenges such as the “plum blossom pile” test.

A self‑balancing wheeled robot that maintains stability even under external disturbances, thanks to advanced balancing algorithms.

The iGrow agricultural AI system, virtual human technology, facial‑recognition platforms, and speech‑front‑end solutions, all of which have been deployed across multiple Tencent products.

During the COVID‑19 pandemic, AI technologies were applied to epidemic control and pathological screening, contributing significantly to the fight against the virus.

The iGrow solution, showcased at the Tencent Cloud (Xinxian) Agricultural Digital Economy Base, aims to transform agriculture from a weather‑dependent practice to a data‑driven industry.

The Go AI “Absolute Art” (Jueyi) renewed its partnership with the Chinese national Go team in 2020, supporting the development of the sport.

Dr. Zhang is an ACM/IEEE Fellow and a world‑renowned AI and robotics scientist. He received the IEEE Helmholtz Time Test Award in 2013 for the “Zhang calibration method,” a camera calibration technique now widely used worldwide.

He has authored over 250 papers with more than 51,000 citations and holds more than 200 patents.

In 2020, he introduced the concept of the Integrated Physical‑Digital World (IPhD), merging AI, VR, AR, MR, IoT, and internet technologies into a unified vision for general artificial intelligence.

Future research directions outlined under the IPhD framework include reality virtualization, virtual reality, holographic internet, and intelligent agents, guiding the next phase of Tencent AI Lab and Robotics X.

Senior Executive Vice President Lu Shan emphasized that Dr. Zhang’s promotion reflects both academic impact and industrial output, and pledged continued support for the labs to become world‑class research institutions.
