Early Life and Family

Linus Torvalds was born on 28 December 1969 in Helsinki, Finland.

His mother worked as a biologist at the University of Helsinki, and his father was a physicist at Aalto University’s computer science laboratory (later the Department of Computer Science). He spent many summers with his grandparents. During university he also spent time abroad, returning home only during academic breaks when his parents were teaching at different European universities.

His wife is Danish politician Tove, and they have two children, son Simon and daughter Si… They also have a dog named Zenneth.

Although he could become very wealthy and could use his position as kernel maintainer to earn a lot, he only wants enough to have food on the table and a place to live.

I’ve been working on it since April and it’s now ready for testing. I’d like any feedback on what people like or dislike about Minix, because my OS is somewhat similar (same file‑system layout, etc.). I’ve already ported bash (1.08) and gcc (1.40) and everything works. This means that “some useful stuff will be available in a few months, and I’d like to know what features most people want.” Feel free to suggest anything, but I can’t promise to implement it.

Because it is open source, free, feature‑rich, and stable, many people have used Linux to create applications, websites, and other software. The Linux kernel now runs on a wide variety of hardware and software platforms, including phones, PCs, and servers.

Linux has become an indispensable part of modern computing. It powers websites and web applications such as Facebook, Netflix, and Spotify, and major companies like Google and Amazon rely heavily on Linux.

In 1991 Linus wrote a text editor named vi for Unix systems. The editor had no graphical interface, only a command line, which made it suitable for beginners because it required no special commands or tools.

The editor’s name reflected its characteristics: fast, simple, easy to use, flexible, supporting multiple languages, and providing good network support via TCP/IP.

He is also known for creating Git, a version‑control system popular among developers.
