TIOBE Programming Language Rankings – February 2022 Top 20 and Trends

The TIOBE Programming Community Index announced its February 2022 ranking, noting that the Alexa traffic ranking engine was discontinued and replaced by Similarweb for data collection.

According to TIOBE CEO Paul Jansen, the switch to Similarweb caused only minor changes in the index, with the top three languages—Python, C, and Java—each gaining more than 1% in popularity.

PHP re‑entered the top ten at position 8, while Assembly language and SQL fell to 9th and 10th respectively, and Swift dropped to 12th. Go rose from 13th to 11th, Objective‑C moved up to 18th, and Fortran slipped to 23rd. Other notable movements include MATLAB (16→14), Ruby (18→16), Perl (20→19) climbing, and R (12→13), Delphi/Object Pascal (14→15), Classic Visual Basic (15→17), and Groovy (17→20) descending.

Ranks 51‑100

Due to minimal differences in index values, positions 51‑100 are listed alphabetically, including languages such as ActionScript, Alice, APL, Arc, AspectJ, and many others.

The TIOBE Index measures programming language popularity based on the number of skilled engineers, courses, and third‑party vendors, using search engines like Google, Bing, Yahoo, Wikipedia, Amazon, YouTube, and Baidu. The exact calculation method is described on the official TIOBE website.
