Asynchronous and Synchronous

Asynchronous (Async) : After a function call is issued, the caller can continue executing other tasks; once the operation completes, the result is delivered via status, notification, or callback, and the caller does not control the return.
In summary, the two differ in whether the request can return immediately and who performs the read operation.
The request can return and allow other operations to proceed (Async) or must wait (Sync).
When the operation can proceed, Sync means the calling thread performs the read itself, while Async means the kernel completes the read and notifies the caller.
Event‑Driven

Synchronous Blocking I/O (BIO) : The user process must wait until the I/O operation completes before it can continue. Traditional Java I/O follows this model.
Synchronous Non‑Blocking I/O (NIO) : The user process can return immediately after issuing an I/O request but must repeatedly poll to check if the operation is ready, which can waste CPU cycles. Java NIO belongs to this category.
Asynchronous Blocking I/O (AIO) : The application issues an I/O request and does not wait; the kernel performs the operation and notifies the application upon completion. Although called “blocking,” it uses the select system call, which can listen to multiple file descriptors simultaneously, improving concurrency.
Asynchronous Non‑Blocking I/O : The application issues an I/O request and returns immediately; when the operation truly finishes, the kernel notifies the application, which then processes the data. Java currently does not provide this model.
