Unlocking China’s First DevOps Capability Maturity Model: Certification Guide
This article explains China’s inaugural DevOps Capability Maturity Model, its continuous delivery requirements, the assessment process, participating enterprises, and how organizations can apply for certification in the upcoming evaluation round.
Continuous delivery is the ability to rapidly and safely deliver changes to production for users, representing an end‑to‑end capability of software teams.
By the end of June 2019, enterprises that passed the rating include Zhejiang Mobile (Level 3), China Bank (Level 3), Tencent (Level 4), China Merchants Bank (seven projects, Level 3), Guangdong Mobile (Level 3), Beijing Mobile (Level 3), Qunar.com (Level 3), Zhengzhou Bank (Level 3), and Shenzhou Taiyue (Level 3).
The world’s first DevOps standard, the "DevOps Capability Maturity Model," was led by the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT) together with the Cloud Computing Open Source Industry Alliance, Efficient Operations Community, DevOps Era Community, Google, BATJ, Tsinghua University, Nanjing University, and top experts from communications and finance sectors. The standard has been formally launched by the ITU‑T and the China Communications Standardization Association (CCSA).
1. DevOps Capability Maturity Model Assessment Overview
The DevOps assessment framework covers agile development management, continuous delivery, technical operations, application architecture, security and risk management, systems and tools. Currently, the assessable portion focuses on the continuous delivery segment of the DevOps process.
About Continuous Delivery Continuous delivery means safely, quickly, and high‑quality implementing all types of changes (new features, bug fixes, configuration changes, experiments, etc.) into production or to users. The technical grading requirements include configuration management, build and CI, test management, deployment and release management, environment management, data management, and measurement & feedback, as illustrated below.
2. DevOps Standard Assessment
The "DevOps Capability Maturity Assessment" helps enterprises improve IT efficiency by unifying requirements, development, testing, deployment, and operations, fostering agile development, continuous delivery, and seamless application operation while maintaining stability and rapid delivery of high‑quality software.
Evaluation Expert Group Mechanism : The expert panel typically consists of 3‑5 assessors from CAICT and certified DevOps assessors.
Review Panel Mechanism : After assessment, a review meeting is held where experts from companies that have already passed the DevOps assessment evaluate the results.
3. Assessment Process and Registration
Registration period: now – September 9 2019
