SIG Cloud Provider – Alibaba Subproject

Alibaba Cloud contributed the first domestic cloud‑provider implementation to the Kubernetes SIG‑Cloud‑Provider project and hosted an online webinar on 12 Feb 2020 to present its strategy and open‑source components.

Upstream Technical Progress (selected KEPs)

Build Kubelet without Docker – proposes removing Docker‑related code from the Kubelet build process, enabling compilation without Docker dependencies.

Fix StatefulSet conversion – resolves a bug that prevented multiple kubectl apply operations on the same StatefulSet.

Fix kubelet/metrics memory issue – corrects a memory‑statistics bug in kubelet metrics collection.

Fix potential race condition in EndpointSlice controller – addresses a concurrency risk that could cause inconsistent EndpointSlice updates.

Add *Options to Create, Update, and Patch in generated clientsets – introduces Options structs for these API operations, improving request customization.

Knative Serving 0.12.1 release – stability‑focused update that adds Contour as the networking layer.

Istio adds EGDS support – introduces Endpoint Group Discovery Service to enable incremental endpoint updates for large clusters (e.g., >10 000 endpoints).

Istio adds Virtual Service chaining – allows multiple VirtualService resources to be linked, simplifying advanced traffic routing and multi‑team ownership.

Open‑Source Tools Recommended for Kubernetes Operations

kube‑storage‑version‑migrator – migrates resources from older API versions to newer ones within a cluster.

kubepug – a kubectl plugin that scans a cluster before an upgrade and warns about deprecated or removed resources.

kind – runs Kubernetes clusters inside Docker containers for local testing and CI pipelines.

The 12 Feb 2020 webinar covered ten categories of Alibaba Cloud’s Kubernetes ecosystem and more than twenty open‑source projects that span the full Kubernetes lifecycle, including cloud‑provider integration, storage migration, CI/CD tooling, and service mesh.
