What’s New in Ubuntu 19.10? Features, Upgrade Guide, and Download Links

Ubuntu 19.10 “Eoan Ermine” Overview

After six months of development, Canonical released Ubuntu 19.10, bringing new features such as LZ4‑based fast boot, ZFS file‑system support, and GNOME 3.34.

Main Features

LZ4 compression for ultra‑fast startup – reduces boot time compared with 18.04/19.04.

ZFS file‑system support – selectable during installation.

GNOME 3.34 desktop – includes the latest GNOME features.

Additional improvements and changes not listed here.

Pre‑Installation Considerations

Before installing, review the following notes.

Upgrade Paths

From Ubuntu 19.04 to 19.10 – Open “Software & Updates”, go to the “Updates” tab, set “Notify me of a new Ubuntu version” to “Any new version”, then check for updates. Note that once upgraded to 19.10 you cannot downgrade to 19.04; a fresh install is required.

From Ubuntu 18.04 LTS – Direct upgrade is not recommended. Wait for Ubuntu 20.04 LTS or first upgrade to 18.10 (now discontinued), then to 19.04 before reaching 19.10. Manual editing of sources.list is discouraged as it may break the system.

Download Options

Ubuntu 19.10 can be downloaded immediately from the official release page (torrent or ISO): https://ubuntu.com/download/desktop . Release notes are available at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/EoanErmine/ReleaseNotes .
