What’s New in Visual Studio 2026? AI‑Powered IDE Features Unveiled

Microsoft has launched the Visual Studio 2026 Insiders preview, outlining the upcoming version’s new capabilities.

A major highlight is the deeper integration of AI into the IDE, described as “woven into the daily coding rhythm” rather than an add‑on. For example, when opening a new repository, the IDE suggests typical test types and keeps documentation and comments in sync with the code.

Microsoft’s blog states: “Code review starts with clear, actionable insights covering correctness, performance, and security—before you even create a pull request. The IDE handles the tedious work; you make the judgments, resulting in faster action and higher‑quality code.”

The company also promises significant performance gains across all areas—from opening solutions to navigating code and building. Faster branch switching, uninterrupted builds, and an instinctive F5 experience (with wait times measured in seconds) are highlighted.

The Visual Studio 2026 UI receives updates, including refined icons, better visual spacing, new color themes, and an improved extension management experience.

Testing shows Visual Studio 2026 can be installed alongside earlier VS versions, and VS2022 users can import components and settings. All extensions built for Visual Studio 2022 remain compatible.

In this release, the new Insiders channel replaces the existing Preview channel for accessing upcoming features, with Microsoft planning monthly updates for Insiders.
