What’s New in Windows 11? A Complete Feature Overview

Windows 11 is the latest version of Microsoft’s operating system, rolled out to supported PCs starting October 5, 2021. Unlike previous Windows 10 updates, this release emphasizes consumer‑focused features and improvements.

Start Menu

The start menu and taskbar have been redesigned with a centered layout and dynamic icons, similar to Android and iOS. Users can still switch back to a left‑aligned menu and apply accent colors.

Windows Widgets

Microsoft reintroduces desktop widgets, offering quick access to news, weather, and traffic updates directly on the desktop.

New Microsoft Store

The Store has been rebuilt to make it easier to discover and install apps, games, movies, and more, now featuring popular desktop applications such as Adobe Creative Cloud, Microsoft Teams, TikTok, Notepad, and Paint.

Clipboard Enhancements

A redesigned clipboard panel (Win + V) lets users paste GIFs and emojis, search for items, and use a new "Paste as plain text" option that strips formatting when pasting into other apps.

Touch Keyboard Redesign

The touch keyboard now supports multiple layouts, a new grab area for moving the keyboard, updated split and compact layouts, and background customization.

Task View and Virtual Desktops

Task View has been refreshed with new controls for virtual desktops, allowing users to rename, reorder, and set custom backgrounds for each desktop.

Captions and Camera Settings

New caption controls are available under Settings → Ease of Access → Hearing → Captions. A dedicated camera settings page lets users adjust brightness, contrast, and see when the camera is in use by apps like Discord or Teams.

Bluetooth Audio Improvements

Bluetooth audio now uses a unified endpoint that automatically switches between microphones and speakers, and adds AAC codec support for higher‑quality streaming on devices such as AirPods.

Display Settings Updates

New options include disabling Content Adaptive Brightness Control (CABC) and an HDR certification section that informs users about their monitor’s HDR capabilities.

File Explorer Layout Refresh

The default layout gains extra padding for touch, a compact mode option to restore the classic look, rounded corners, and a new command bar that adopts the Windows 11 Mica material.

Default File‑Type Management

The Settings app now offers a clearer interface for choosing default apps, improving the process of changing file‑type associations.

Storage Health Monitoring

Windows 11 can monitor NVMe SSD health and notify users of potential data risks, prompting backups and recovery actions.

Optimized Drive Tool

Traditional tools like "Optimize Drives" receive new advanced view options and status details for hidden volumes.

New Emojis

Over 200 new emoji glyphs have been added, including tea, crying‑laugh, ninja, and gender‑neutral designs.

New System Fonts

The default UI font Segoe is updated with new Fluent icons and a variable version that improves readability across all sizes.

Windows Sandbox Improvements

Sandbox now leverages Windows 10X container technology for faster startup and runs the Chromium‑based Microsoft Edge.

Removal of Bloatware

Unnecessary apps such as 3D Viewer, Paint 3D, and the Math Input Panel are no longer pre‑installed, though they can be added from the Store if needed.

Native Apps Updated via Store

Classic apps like Paint, Notepad, and Snipping Tool receive updates through the Microsoft Store, with refreshed icons.

Windows Tools Folder

A new "Windows Tools" folder groups advanced utilities like PowerShell and system accessories, streamlining access from File Explorer.
