What the 2021 GitHub Octoverse Reveals About Global Developer Trends

The globally renowned code‑hosting platform GitHub has released its 2021 Octoverse report, the first to combine data from over 4 million repositories and more than 12 000 developers.

Key highlights include:

16 million new users joined in 2021.

Nearly 84 % of companies use GitHub Enterprise.

61 million new repositories and 170 million pull‑request merges were added.

Geographic distribution of active users

North America users fell 2.3 % year‑over‑year, while Asia grew 0.3 %, Europe 0.7 %, South America 1.0 %, Africa 0.3 % and Oceania declined 0.1 %.

Popular programming languages

JavaScript remains the most popular language on GitHub, with Python now the second‑most popular, followed by Java and the rapidly growing TypeScript.

Work mode

Productivity returned to pre‑pandemic levels in 2021, with many developers shifting to remote or hybrid work. Only 11 % of respondents plan to return to the office full‑time, a 30 % drop from the previous 41 %.

Automation eliminated friction and repetitive tasks, boosting open‑source performance by 27 % and overall work productivity by 43 %.

Using README files, contribution guides and issue templates acts as a “secret weapon” for open‑source projects: they invite new contributors and raise developer productivity by 55 %. Companies can adopt these best practices to support their teams and launch internal source programs. Fewer reviewers increase the number of pull requests; each additional reviewer reduces the daily merged pull‑request count by 17 %.

GitHub Actions are widely adopted in large repositories, increasing the number of merged pull requests by 36 % and reducing merge time by 33 %.

First‑time contributors continued to rise, with 213 319 new contributors in 2021. China added nearly 1.03 million developers, bringing the total to about 7.55 million.

Among large projects, Docker tops the list with 632 k contributors worldwide, far exceeding the Linux kernel.
