What the Recent Hack of Donald Trump Jr.’s X Account Reveals About Platform Security

Donald Trump Jr.'s X account was compromised on Wednesday, marking another high‑profile security incident during Elon Musk's ownership of the platform.

The hacked account posted several unusual messages, including a claim that former President Donald Trump had "died" and that the younger Trump would take over the 2024 presidential campaign.

Republican strategist and Trump Jr.'s spokesperson Andrew Surabian later confirmed via Twitter that the account had been hacked.

The false posts were removed later that morning, and Trump Jr. subsequently posted on X, accusing "Hunter Biden" of hacking his account.

Security issues at X (formerly Twitter) have been persistent, predating Musk's takeover; a 2020 large‑scale hack hijacked popular accounts to promote a Bitcoin scam, leading to legal consequences for the perpetrators.

Earlier this year, a leaked database allegedly containing over 200 million X usernames and email addresses was reported, though Musk's company denied any connection to the breach.

Former head of X's Trust and Safety, Ella Irwin, left the company in June, and Musk’s layoffs also affected that department.

X remains under investigation by the Federal Trade Commission regarding its ability to protect user privacy and potential violations of its 2011 security commitments. Previous reports by CNN and The Washington Post highlighted extensive, unresolved security vulnerabilities after former security chief Peiter "Mudge" Zatko’s disclosures.

Similar high‑profile account takeovers have occurred before, such as the 2020 hack that impersonated Twitter IT support to control accounts of Barack Obama, Jeff Bezos, Joe Biden, and Elon Musk.

These incidents emphasize the critical importance of robust cybersecurity practices for developers and platform operators.

About Donald Trump Jr.: Donald John Trump Jr. (born December 31, 1977) is the eldest son of former U.S. President Donald Trump and his first wife Ivana Trump, and serves as a trustee of the Trump Organization.
