According to the TIOBE index, the R and Groovy languages moved up in the February 2021 ranking, while Go and Swift slipped.

Python held the third position, followed by C++, C#, Visual Basic, JavaScript, PHP and SQL.
The long‑standing Assembly language revived, climbing from 12th to 10th place.
Data‑analysis language R jumped from 13th to 11th, and Groovy surged from 26th to 12th; classic Visual Basic also rose four spots to 18th.
Go fell to 13th (down from 11th) and Swift dropped to 15th (down from 10th).
TIOBE Software CEO Paul Jansen noted that positions 9 and 10 are not as highly ranked as the top eight. He said: “In the past 12 months, these two spots were occupied by SQL, Assembly, R, Groovy, Go and Swift. I’m curious which of these languages will become a stable top‑ten.”
Among ranks 11‑20, the languages that moved up are: Go (14→13), Ruby (15→14), Delphi/Object Pascal (19→17), Classic Visual Basic (20→18). Those that fell are: Swift (13→15), Perl (17→19), Objective‑C (18→20).
