Why AI Agents Should Be Positioned as Assistants, Not Replacements
The article explains that marketing AI agents as human replacements leads to poor performance, professional resistance, and hallucination risks, and argues that repositioning them as assistants with human‑in‑the‑loop verification improves efficiency and acceptance.
When building internal platforms, we initially claimed that AI agents could replace customer‑service reps, designers, and BI engineers to achieve cost‑saving and efficiency goals.
In practice three major problems surfaced: (1) current domestic LLM/Agent capabilities cannot fully replace humans and fall short in quality; (2) the targeted professionals—customer‑service staff, designers, and BI engineers—reacted with resentment and refused to cooperate; (3) end‑users cannot detect model hallucinations, as illustrated by a Data Agent that delivers incorrect data without users realizing the error.
Beyond upgrading to stronger models and refining the agent architecture, we changed the positioning from “replacement” to “assistant”. Agents are no longer presented directly to end‑users; their outputs are reviewed by humans before being sent, thereby eliminating the risk of hallucinations.
A concrete example involves a BI engineer using a Data Agent to fetch data and generate the corresponding SQL. The engineer reviews the SQL—if it is correct, the result is delivered to the end‑user; if not, the engineer corrects it before delivery. This workflow is typically faster than starting from scratch to locate data and write SQL.
Although the narrative is less “sexy”, the assistant approach demonstrably raises human productivity, reduces staffing needs, and satisfies all stakeholders.
