Why AliSQL’s Open‑Source Release Matters: Performance, Maintenance, and RDS Comparison

AliSQL’s open‑source launch sparked debate, prompting explanations of its 70% performance claim, ongoing maintenance guarantees, the absence of a commercial Enterprise edition, and how it differs from Alibaba Cloud RDS, which bundles AliSQL with additional managed services.

Why AliSQL’s Open‑Source Release Matters: Performance, Maintenance, and RDS Comparison

AliSQL recently announced that it will be open‑sourced, generating both encouragement and skepticism. To address the main concerns, Ding Qi, head of the RDS kernel development and operations team at Alibaba Cloud, provided detailed explanations.

Performance Claim of 70% Improvement

The cited 70% performance boost comes from sysbench benchmark results using the update_non_index.lua test under identical hardware and configuration. This benchmark is widely accepted in the industry. While specific workloads could yield even higher gains, those scenarios lack general applicability, so the chosen test reflects a common, reproducible environment.

Past Open‑Source Projects and Ongoing Commitment

Although some of Alibaba’s earlier open‑source projects (e.g., XX, YY) were perceived as abandoned, AliSQL is the backend database for the RDS service. As long as the RDS business continues, AliSQL will have dedicated personnel ensuring its maintenance and development.

Concern About a Commercial “Enterprise” Edition

RDS itself is a commercial offering, but AliSQL does not have a separate commercial version. The open‑source release aims to foster a community ecosystem rather than serve a direct commercial purpose, and there are no plans for an “AliSQL Enterprise” edition.

Choosing Between AliSQL and Alibaba Cloud RDS

RDS runs on AliSQL underneath, but the service includes extensive additional features such as backup and recovery systems, high‑availability architecture, and expert support. In contrast, using AliSQL directly means deploying and managing the database yourself, which still requires in‑house DBA resources for tasks like maintenance, backups, and scaling.
