Why All Debian 9 Live Images Fail to Install and How the Bug Is Being Fixed

All Debian 9 live images suffer from a critical installation bug caused by absolute package paths, leading to missing libzlo2‑2‑udeb files, and developers have opened a Grave‑severity bug report (#865015) with a fix currently being tested for a full rebuild.

Why All Debian 9 Live Images Fail to Install and How the Bug Is Being Fixed

Debian 9 was released recently, but every live image contains a bug that prevents installation with the graphical installer.

The installer displays the error “There was an error reading data from the CD-ROM… Failed to copy from CD-ROM, retry?” and the log shows a missing package file: libzlo2-2-udeb_2.08-1.2+b2_amd64.udeb.

The same problem occurs with all Debian 9 live images (GNOME, KDE, LXDE, XFCE, Cinnamon, etc.), confirming that every live variant is affected.

Debian developers have opened bug report #865015 on the Debian Tracker, classifying it as Grave severity.

According to developer Steve McIntyre, the root cause is that the Packages files in the images reference .deb files using full absolute paths instead of paths relative to the image.

A fix is being tested, and if successful, all Debian 9 live images will be rebuilt to resolve the issue.
