Why Arch Linux Overtook Ubuntu on Steam: May 2022 Survey Insights

Steam released its May 2022 survey results, indicating a modest decline in Linux's overall market share to 1.12%, while Windows remains dominant at 96.68% and macOS holds 2.2% of the user base.

In April, Ubuntu 20.04 LTS was the leading Linux distribution with a 0.16% share, closely followed by Arch Linux at 0.14% and Manjaro (based on Arch) at 0.13%.

By May, Arch Linux 64‑bit overtook Ubuntu 20.04 LTS to become the most popular Linux distribution on Steam. Arch's rolling release model is counted as a single version, giving it a notable advantage. Manjaro and other Arch‑derived distributions are tracked separately.

Ubuntu 22.04 LTS also appears in the list with a total share of 0.09%.

Additional data show that the most common hardware configuration among Steam users is 16 GB of RAM and a 4‑core CPU.
