Why CNCF’s Acceptance of openGemini Boosts Cloud‑Native Time‑Series Databases

On a recent date the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) officially accepted openGemini, a high‑performance time‑series database project initiated by Huawei Cloud.

openGemini leverages Huawei Cloud’s extensive database expertise to solve storage and analysis challenges of massive observability data, promoting digital transformation across industries and advancing open‑source observability database technology.

Huawei Cloud CTO Zhang Yuxin emphasized that for IoT and large‑scale operations scenarios, an integrated storage‑analysis solution offers great advantages, and openGemini shows outstanding performance in metric management and multi‑dimensional aggregation.

Huawei Cloud Open‑Source Business General Manager Deng Mingkun stressed that openGemini is a key part of Huawei Cloud’s cloud‑native full‑stack open‑source strategy, and CNCF’s support will accelerate its innovation and ecosystem growth.

CNCF Technical Oversight Committee member Wang Zefeng noted that observability is a vital component of the cloud‑native ecosystem, and openGemini provides storage, analysis, compression, and cluster‑scaling capabilities for large‑scale monitoring data, reducing storage costs.

Since its open‑source launch in 2022, openGemini has attracted over 1,000 GitHub stars, 140 forks, more than 100 external contributors, and adoption by over 60 enterprises for testing and production.

openGemini is the open‑source counterpart of Huawei Cloud’s GeminiDB, a multi‑model NoSQL database built on a cloud‑native compute‑storage separation architecture, already deployed in major customers such as Huawei Cloud operations, top‑tier automotive IoT, large internet operators, and state‑owned IoT platforms.

Huawei Cloud plans to advance openGemini and GeminiDB together, collaborating with partners and developers to foster community growth, talent cultivation, and a vibrant technical ecosystem.
