Game operations are notorious for demanding rapid response to any latency, as even a brief hiccup can be fatal to a game’s reputation.

Yu explains that frequent overtime in the gaming sector stems from the fast‑paced version releases and the need for operators to understand the entire game business flow. By monitoring operational data, he can often anticipate tasks and avoid unprepared overtime, especially after developing automation scripts.

Regarding compensation, a skilled game ops engineer typically earns a base salary plus project bonuses, sometimes achieving earnings equivalent to 25 months of salary in a year. However, many game ops roles involve smaller server clusters, limiting exposure to large‑scale infrastructure and thus capping technical growth and pay.

Yu advises newcomers to continuously build their technical reserves; otherwise, career prospects may narrow as the industry evolves.
