Why Microsoft Is Sunsetting Windows Subsystem for Android – What It Means for Users

Microsoft announced that Windows Subsystem for Android (WSA) will lose support on March 5, 2025, ending the Amazon Appstore integration and affecting all Android apps and games on Windows, a move driven by low demand, limited app sources, and a shift in user reliance on mobile platforms.

Support Termination

Microsoft will end support for Windows Subsystem for Android (WSA) on March 5 2025. After that date the Amazon Appstore and any Android apps or games that rely on WSA will no longer be supported, although technical assistance is available until the deprecation date.

Impact Timeline

Devices that installed the Amazon Appstore or Android apps before March 5 2024 will continue to run those apps until the deprecation deadline (March 5 2025). After the deadline the apps become unavailable.

Technical Architecture

WSA was introduced in Windows 11 (2021) to run Android applications natively on x86‑based hardware. It uses Intel Bridge technology to translate Android binaries for execution on Intel, AMD, and Qualcomm CPUs. The subsystem consists of:

A Linux kernel (as in WSL).

An Android OS built from AOSP 11.

A Hyper‑V virtual machine that hosts the Linux kernel and Android system.

WSA maps Android runtime APIs to the Windows graphics stack, memory buffers, input methods, device and sensor interfaces. APKs can be installed directly via ADB.

Distribution Model

Microsoft partnered with Amazon, so Android apps are distributed exclusively through the Amazon Appstore; Google Play is not available. The catalog is heavily weighted toward games.

Reasons for Discontinuation

The limited app source, performance constraints, and declining user demand led Microsoft to discontinue WSA. Early speculation linked the project to Apple’s M1‑based iOS app support, but the market trend toward native mobile usage reduced the need for a Windows‑based Android layer.
