Why Podman Desktop Is the Free, Secure Alternative to Docker Desktop

Podman Desktop, sponsored by Red Hat, offers a UI for building, running, and managing containers and local Kubernetes clusters, integrates with OpenShift, supports multiple registries, provides a built‑in terminal, and delivers daemon‑less, non‑privileged operation as a free competitor to Docker Desktop.

Why Podman Desktop Is the Free, Secure Alternative to Docker Desktop

Red Hat‑sponsored open‑source project Podman Desktop has been officially released.

Podman Desktop’s features include building and running containers, running Kubernetes locally, and connecting to and deploying on remote OpenShift clusters (Red Hat’s Kubernetes distribution). The product manager, Stevan Le Meur, highlighted that the UI simplifies container management for enterprise developers.

For Kubernetes, it uses Kind to create local clusters and can integrate with OpenShift Local. Podman Desktop can pull, tag, and push images from multiple registries, including Docker Hub, and includes a built‑in terminal that allows SSH‑style access to containers. Extensions are supported, including parts of Docker Desktop’s UI extensions.

Podman itself is a Linux command‑line tool for pulling and running container images, largely compatible with Docker commands. It can run as a non‑privileged user without a daemon, and is available on macOS (via QEMU) and Windows (via WSL). Its daemon‑less architecture provides a security advantage for production use.

Although Podman and Podman Desktop are less known than Docker and Docker Desktop, interest grew after Docker Desktop became a paid product in March 2021. Docker has since focused on its desktop with new features, extensions, and Docker Scout for vulnerability analysis, and it bundles a local Kubernetes cluster.

Podman Desktop’s free nature is a strong attraction, reducing cost and license‑management complexity, but it still faces challenges competing with the more mature Docker ecosystem.
