Why Progressive JPEGs Boost Web Performance: Benefits, Drawbacks, and Real‑World Test

JPEG files can be saved in two ways: Baseline (standard) and Progressive.

Baseline stores image data line by line from top to bottom; browsers display it sequentially, so large files load row by row.

Progressive stores multiple scans with increasing detail; browsers first show a blurry outline and then refine it as more data arrives.

Advantages of Progressive JPEGs include fixed dimensions from the start, preventing layout shifts and improving page rendering performance, as well as better perceived user experience because the image outline appears immediately.

Disadvantages are higher CPU and memory usage compared to Baseline.

Practical Test

1. Prepare a 1.1 MB image and place it in a test page inside a <div style="border:2px solid red"> container to visualize loading area.

2. Convert the image to Progressive using ImageMagick: convert 原图.JPG -interlace Plane 新图.JPG The file size changes only by a few kilobytes.

3. Load the test page with both the original and the converted image.

Result: The Progressive image’s container expands to the correct size immediately, indicating that the dimensions are known before full loading, whereas the Baseline image’s container remains collapsed until the image finishes loading.
