Serverless is portrayed as the next phase of cloud computing, with Gartner predicting that 20% of enterprises will adopt Serverless by 2020. The Tencent Cloud TVP technical closed‑door meeting on March 21 gathered leading Serverless experts to discuss the technology’s evolution from concept to practice. Speakers highlighted that, although best practices are still emerging, Serverless offers significant advantages such as automatic scaling, cost efficiency, and rapid development.

"Serverless enables developers to focus on solutions rather than underlying infrastructure," said Austen Collins, CEO of Serverless.com and creator of the Serverless Framework, which boasts over 35,000 stars and millions of downloads.

Key use cases presented include REST APIs, stream processing, GraphQL APIs, scheduled workflows, edge computing, and emerging WebAssembly integrations. A North American retailer reported managing over 4,000 Serverless applications with just 70 developers, illustrating how Serverless can dramatically reduce operational overhead.

Practical guidance from Chinese practitioners emphasized:

Choosing between functions and apps based on business needs, using lightweight GraphQL apps for complex interactions.

Managing environments with namespaces, versions, and aliases in Tencent Cloud.

Storing secret keys securely in object storage and assigning appropriate execution roles.

Experts warned that Serverless is not a silver bullet; it may not suit every workload, especially those requiring traditional databases or full control over infrastructure.

"Serverless is the future form of cloud, a super‑power for developers," concluded Collins.

Local Chinese experts echoed similar sentiments, noting Serverless’s low cost across learning, development, and operational phases, and its suitability for fast‑iteration business scenarios rather than stable, long‑running services.

Front‑end developers were identified as a primary audience, with Serverless offering a seamless full‑stack experience that can boost productivity and reduce costs, especially for small‑team or game development projects.

"Serverless frees developers from worrying about servers, APIs, or storage, letting them concentrate on business logic," said Huang Ke, Serverless.com China R&D lead.

The partnership between Tencent Cloud and Serverless.com aims to bring North American experience to China, providing a comprehensive Serverless solution that covers the entire software lifecycle—from development and deployment to operations.
