Will Android Power Future PCs? Google’s Plan to Merge Android with ChromeOS Explained
Google announced it will retain both Android and ChromeOS while rebuilding ChromeOS on the Android stack, aiming to launch Android‑based PCs by 2026 that combine ChromeOS‑like experience with full Android app compatibility, leveraging Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon processors for seamless cross‑device integration.
Earlier rumors suggested Google would merge Android with ChromeOS, but the company clarified in July 2025 that both systems will remain, with ChromeOS being rebuilt on the Android underlying stack.
At Qualcomm’s annual event, Google announced the launch of Snapdragon X2 Elite processors for Windows PCs and Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chips for smartphones, underscoring the hardware support for this strategy.
Google’s Android ecosystem lead Samir Samat explained that the team is borrowing the ChromeOS experience and reconstructing its core technologies on Android, and they are excited about the upcoming integration.
He emphasized that Google will not abandon the existing ChromeOS or Android tablets; the focus is on creating Android‑based laptops that enable seamless cross‑device connectivity, similar to Apple’s ecosystem.
The vision is that, starting in 2026, PCs running Android will appear on the market, offering a ChromeOS‑like experience while supporting a wide range of Android applications optimized for larger screens.
