Youzan Database Technology Open Day 2018 – Sessions on RDS System, MySQL Index Design, and Operations
At Youzan’s 2018 Database Technology Open Day in Hangzhou, 53 companies and 64 participants heard sessions on the evolving RDS architecture, MySQL index design best practices, the ZanDB operations platform, and classic MySQL performance case studies, while showcasing micro‑mall integration and outlining upcoming data‑archiving and multi‑data‑center initiatives.
Hangzhou enjoyed sunny weather as it hosted Youzan's 2018 final offline technical salon – the Youzan Database Technology Open Day. 53 companies and 64 participants attended, listening attentively and engaging actively in Q&A. A recording of the event will be released later.
The first speaker, a young colleague, presented “Youzan RDS System”, describing the evolution of Youzan’s database architecture, the DDL system, standardization, and HA‑mode proactive operation and fault recovery.
The second speaker, Wang Hangwei, delivered “MySQL Index Design and Case Analysis”. He explained B+Tree, clustered and secondary indexes, and offered best practices: keep primary keys small and single‑field, declare bigint primary keys explicitly, align auto‑increment with B+Tree split direction, and avoid updating primary keys. Based on these principles, Youzan’s own index design was presented through four case studies.
During the tea break, attendees could receive coupons generated via Youzan’s micro‑mall, choosing from milk tea, coffee, canned drinks, bottled drinks, fruit, desserts, snacks, etc., demonstrating the integration of the micro‑mall with offline stores.
The next session, “Youzan Database Operations Platform” by Yang Yi, covered the evolution from manual scripts to standardized, platform‑based management, and introduced the ZanDB system ( ZanDB system ). Future work for the next six months includes data archiving, data migration, backup optimization, and support for dual‑data‑center deployment.
The final talk, again by Wang Hangwei, “Youzan MySQL Operations Classic Case Analysis”, examined five classic cases: network jitter during transactions, a performance issue caused by a single SQL, slowdown from massive deletions, slow queries due to TCP retransmission, and using strace to pinpoint problems. He presented a methodology for locating the root cause of MySQL performance issues.
Youzan’s database services have evolved over six years since the company’s founding in 2012, and the accumulated experience aims to help fellow DBAs.
