Analyzing 42,123 ICLR papers (2017–2026) across 28 research directions, this study finds that chasing hot topics like LLMs and Agents yields higher acceptance rates early on, but the advantage disappears once a direction peaks, as growth shifts from accepts to rejections — making momentum a rational but time-limited strategy for PhD students.
