Anthropic’s Only Direct Report: Avital Balwit, Fiancée of the AI “Stock God”

Anthropic’s CEO Dario Amodei has only one direct report: Chief of Staff Avital Balwit. All other executives report to his sister, co‑founder and president Daniela Amodei, effectively splitting the CEO role between the siblings.

Avital Balwit, a non‑engineer, holds a bachelor’s in Political and Social Thought from the University of Virginia, a Rhodes Scholarship to Oxford, and collaborated with the Future of Humanity Institute on transformative AI, AI safety and long‑termism. Before joining Anthropic she was a freelance writer of novels, poetry and a children’s book on octopus cognition.

Balwit’s 2024 essay “My Last Five Years of Work”

In the essay she warned that the next few years could be the last of her career and argued that knowledge‑intensive jobs—copywriting, customer service, legal review, data analysis and software development—will face unprecedented automation as AGI approaches. She quoted:

AI does not need to surpass the world’s best humans; it only needs to outperform the people companies would hire for a given task.

The essay sparked debate; two years later many firms have begun restructuring workflows around AI and Silicon Valley has seen a wave of layoffs.

Balwit’s fiancé, former OpenAI researcher, was dismissed in April 2024 after sending a safety‑focused memorandum to the board. He authored a 165‑page treatise “Situational Awareness” predicting AGI emergence around 2027 and that training clusters will require gigawatt‑scale power comparable to a small nuclear plant. He subsequently founded a hedge fund named Situational Awareness, which grew from $225 million to $5.5 billion in one year and now manages over $20 billion, focusing on AI‑critical infrastructure such as energy, power grids, data centers and photonic communications.

Management philosophy

Dario Amodei focuses on Anthropic’s strategy, culture and research direction, delegating day‑to‑day operations to Daniela Amodei. Employees report that Dario spends extensive time discussing the company’s vision in internal “Vision Conferences” (DVQ). He described the extreme flatness—having only one direct report—as giving him “incredible freedom” to concentrate on strategic matters.
