Apple’s New CEO John Ternus: Steering the Company into the AI Era

Tim Cook officially relinquishes the CEO role at Apple, passing the leadership baton to hardware veteran John Ternus, who joined the company’s design team in 2001 and previously served as senior vice president of hardware engineering.

During Cook’s tenure, Apple’s market capitalization grew from roughly $350 billion to more than $4.5 trillion. Annual revenue rose from $108 billion to $416 billion, and profit exceeded $1.12 trillion, driven by a supply‑chain‑centric strategy and the ability to monetize the iPhone user base beyond hardware sales.

Critics note that under Cook Apple lost some of its innovation edge: the company cancelled a decade‑long electric‑vehicle project in 2024, suffered a high‑profile failure with Apple Maps in 2012, and its Vision Pro mixed‑reality headset, launched in 2023 at $3,499, lagged in AI capabilities and sales.

John Ternus now inherits the biggest challenge—artificial intelligence. Analysts such as Brian Mulberry of Zacks argue that Apple must prove AI is more than an iPhone app or an upgraded Siri. At the same time, Ternus must continue diversifying manufacturing away from China, a process already underway with iPhone production shifting to India and AirPods/iPad assembly moving to Vietnam.
