Could OpenAI End Up Owning Chrome? Inside the Google Antitrust Battle
Amid a U.S. antitrust trial that could force Google to divest Chrome, OpenAI’s ChatGPT product lead says the company would consider buying the browser, while both firms navigate past negotiations and future AI‑driven search ambitions.
During the ongoing antitrust trial, U.S. authorities are seeking remedies after a judge ruled that Google’s Chrome browser engaged in monopolistic behavior, potentially forcing Alphabet to sell Chrome.
OpenAI’s ChatGPT product lead, Nick Turley, stated that if regulators compel Google to divest Chrome, OpenAI would be interested in acquiring the browser.
Turley also revealed that OpenAI had approached Google last year to discuss a partnership that would allow ChatGPT to use Google’s search technology, but Google declined, citing concerns about competition.
OpenAI continues developing its own search tool, originally aiming to have ChatGPT handle up to 80% of searches by the end of 2025, though Turley testified that achieving this goal will likely take several more years.
